Separate Abandoned Account & Checkout Triggers: Shopify Flow has 'Customer created' but no 'abandoned account creation' trigger.; Abandoned checkout messages must reference verified cart details, not assumed items.; Use 'Customer abandons checkout' for order recovery, not account setup help.

Handling abandoned account creation separately from abandoned checkout

An abandoned account setup and an abandoned checkout indicate different unfinished tasks.

An abandoned account setup and an abandoned checkout indicate different unfinished tasks. The first person may need help creating access; the second may need to finish a specific order. Use separate triggers, messages and success checks so a registration problem does not receive a cart reminder. Shopify Flow names Customer abandons checkout, but not an abandoned-account-creation trigger.

Identify the last completed step

Write down what the system actually records. A form started but never submitted may leave no reliable contact address or permission to send. An account created but not activated differs from an account form abandoned halfway.

A checkout started may carry a cart and contact details. Do not infer one event from another merely because both happened in the same session.

Shopify Flow names Customer created and Customer abandons checkout as separate triggers. Shopify's guidance explains that customers can be emailed a link to complete an abandoned checkout. Confirm the data available in the actual platform before designing a message.

Shopify Flow also names Customer account enabled, Customer account disabled and Customer subscribed to email marketing, but not an abandoned-account-creation trigger. Customer created is a completed-creation event, not evidence that someone abandoned a form; use it as a completion check, not the account journey's entry.

Where a platform records an actual incomplete-account event, use that event to start a separate account journey; do not substitute Customer abandons checkout. If no such event or contact record exists, leave the person out rather than send a reminder.

Shopify considers a checkout abandoned if it remains incomplete for more than ten minutes after the customer provides an email address. Checkout recovery is available only for the Online Store and Buy Button sales channels, not Shopify POS or third-party sales channels.

Match the help to the task

For incomplete account creation, identify the obstacle: verification email, password setup, required profile field or unclear benefit of an account. If you have a legitimate way to contact the person, a concise help message can explain the next step. Do not imply they placed an order or left items in a cart when no checkout event exists.

If the account form was only partly completed and left no reliable contact address or permission, send nothing. A missing account-abandonment event cannot be replaced with Customer abandons checkout; that trigger belongs to the checkout journey.

For abandoned checkout, refer only to verified cart details and provide a safe route back to the order. Shopify's guidance describes emailing a customer a link to complete an abandoned checkout. In Shopify, items in a customer's cart at the time of abandonment aren't saved, so don't assume those items are available to reference.

Check the store's configuration before using Shopify's checkout-recovery approach elsewhere. Keep the account message about account setup and the checkout message about completing the order.

Define exit conditions

An account journey should stop when the account task is complete; in Shopify Flow, Customer created can mark that completion. A checkout journey should stop when the order is placed or no longer available.

If both paths could apply, give the checkout journey priority when Customer abandons checkout fires; hold account help until checkout no longer applies, and send it only if an incomplete-account event remains. Do not send both reminders together.

Recheck purchase status just before a checkout reminder, since a customer may complete the order through another device. Avoid sending two reminders close together.

Test the event sequence with harmless profiles: partial account attempt, completed account without cart, started checkout and completed purchase. For Shopify checkout recovery, check the more-than-ten-minute threshold after email capture and confirm the sales channel is Online Store or Buy Button.
